Everything Kelly McGillis Has Said About “Top Gun: Maverick”

When “Top Gun: Maverick” finally comes out in theaters at the end of this month, fans of the 1986 classic will get to see Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) and Tom “Iceman” Kazansky (Tom Cruise) for the first time in a long time (Val Kilmer). But Charlotte “Charlie” Blackwood, the Top Gun instructor that Kelly McGillis played, won’t be there.

Top Gun was made by Paramount in 1984, a long time before Tom Holland, who is 5’8″, and Zendaya, who is 5’10”, walked confidently down the red carpet for Spiderman No Way Home, breaking “stupid” gender stereotypes about height.

It was fine that Harrison Ford was in Witness, Kelly McGillis’s first movie for Paramount, with her, but Harrison was 6’1″.

Demi Moore was in rehab, and at the time, her insurance company told her they wouldn’t cover her. Later, in the 1992 movie A Few Good Men, Cruise and Moore were very interesting to watch.

When I worked at Paramount, we used to sign three-picture deals with new actors. We were sure to get the first picture, but they could choose between two more. If they became famous because of a Paramount movie, we could negotiate two more deals at fair prices (from the studio’s point of view). It was just what Paramount did, and Eddie Murphy and Kelly McGillis were the first ones to do it in 48 Hours and Witness.

Why Wasn’t Kelly McGillis Asked to Return for ‘Top Gun: Maverick’?

McGillis told Entertainment Tonight in 2019: “I’m old, I’m fat, and I look right for my age.” “No, that’s not what that scene is all about. I’d rather feel completely comfortable in my own skin and with who I am at my age than put a value on all that other stuff.

Does Kelly McGillis still talk to the cast of “Top Gun”?

“Strange things, movies. I don’t talk to anyone very often, “In 2019, the actress told ET that she hadn’t seen the trailer at that time. “I think I’ve talked to a few people here and there, but the truth is that making movies is a very strange job because people come from all over the world to work together.”

“Top Gun: Maverick” is a new movie from Paramount Pictures that comes out on May 27.

Kelly McGillis first said in 2019 that she had not been asked to be in the “Top Gun” sequel. At the time, she said, “I’m old, I’m fat, and I look my age. And that’s not the point of the whole scene. I’d rather feel completely comfortable in my own skin and with who I am at my age than put a value on all that other stuff.
