CentOS gedit and rpm spec file highlighting

Well I have been using CentOS for awhile now and was building some rpm’s and noticed that gedit wasn’t highlighting .spec files like in other distros I have used so I found a way to fix this problem. First download this file highlight package.

Once you have downloaded this package which is merely the spec.lang file pulled from the fedora repo’s., you need to copy it to /usr/share/gtksourceview-1.0/language-specs/ so as root use this command

cp spec.lang /usr/share/gtksourceview-1.0/language-specs/

Now to make sure it you got it right issue this command

cd /usr/share/gtksourceview-1.0/language-specs/

and look for our newly copied spec.lang file and make sure its there. If so now you can run gedit and open a spec file of your choice. Now I noticed the first time I opened a spec file I had to select View–>Highlight Mode–>Others–>RPM Spec to get the highlighting to work but after that no matter what spec file I opened it worked, gedit auto detected it and highlighted the spec file like normal. And that’s it now when you build rpm’s when editing your spec file in gedit you will have nice colorful highlighting. I know simple and trivial but fun nontheless.

I was goofing around today with gimp and made a background for my blackberry based on CentOS which is the linux distro of my choice. Right click -> Save as then send it to your blackberry.
